AV8 Buzzards Bay Regatta 2019

Author: Brendan Healy

The Cabrinha AV8 saw its regatta debut this August over the weekend of the 2nd through the 4th at the 47th Annual Buzzards Bay Regatta, hosted by the New Bedford Yacht Club in South Dartmouth, MA.  Nine total competitors from up and down the East Coast, USA registered for this amazing event and they were treated to spectacular racing conditions and equally awesome hospitality on Buzzards Bay.  Adventure Sports was on hand to supply 9 complete kits of AV8 equipment to registered racers.

Day one greeted competitors with breeze out of the Southwest building late in the day to 12-14 knots.  Unfortunately, the breeze materialized too late in the day to support any racing, but that didn’t stop the AV8 competitors from getting out on the water to give the gear a warm-up rip before the main event on Saturday.

Saturday treated all competitors to champagne sailing conditions with breeze from the Southwest at 14 to 16 knots and extremely flat water.  A total of 7 races were completed throughout the day making for some excellent racing and certainly some very close competition.  With all competitors on identical equipment, the skills of the racer mean everything as opposed to the Open Kite Division where typically the sailors with the deepest pockets are able to get their mits the most high end equipment available in order to rise to the top of the ranks.

Unfortunately the breeze never materialized on Sunday so racing was abandoned for the day at noon.  Sailors were then treated to complimentary food and beverages at the trophy presentation at the New Bedford Yacht Club.

The AV8 seems to have a very bright future with the next big event scheduled for November 15th through 17th in Miami, FL and hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club.  A HUGE thanks to our event sponsor, Key West Legal Rum for providing trophies and swag!  Our rum friends will again be on hand at the Miami event to provide bottles of their tasty treats to all competitors!
